Tour Perth, One of the Highlights of Western Australia
Perth, the ‘City of Light’, is the capital of Western Australia, and the largest city in the region. Almost 2 million people call Perth their home and it is an exciting, vibrant city to explore. One of the best ways to get to know a city is with a knowledgeable guide as part of a tour, and Adventure Tours Australia is a great place to start. They offer tours all over Australia, including Perth Tours and tours of Kangaroo Island. Still, for those looking to strike out on their own, or looking for activities to bookend their tour, here’s some suggestions to get you started.
King’s Park
King’s Park is a beautiful stretch of over 400 hectares of bushland, parks and gardens, with beautiful views across the Swan River and the city of Perth. Take a walk at night when the city will be lit up before you. Go on a monument and statue hunt to find the assortment of sculpture and monuments scattered throughout the park, seemingly at random. Rent a bike and take one of the numerous cycle paths or dirt tracks (Dryandra Lookout is worth a visit and a photo!) Pack a picnic and enjoy the outdoors, or watch some of the local wildlife with ringneck parrots, galahs, corellas, rainbow lorikeets, klookaburras and more on display.
Rottnest Island
Rottnest Island, a Class A reserve, is a wonderful place to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of the city. With over 60 stunning beaches, 20 bays and numerous coral reefs and wrecks, Rottnest, or ‘Rotto’ as the locals call it, offers some of the best swimming spots, snorkel trails and surf breaks in the area. Ferries depart regularly from Fremantle, Perth’s Barrack Street Jetty and Hillarys Marina, and the island is only 19km off the coast so travel time is short. No cars are allowed on the island, so hiring a bicycle is the best way to get around. For those feeling like being driven the Bayseeker Bus regularly makes laps of the islands. From Thompson Bay you can play golf, tennis, shop, or take a tour, and there are beautiful early colonial buildings to see as well as wildlife from Ospreys to Whales.
Cultural Centre
The Perth Cultural Centre comprises the Western Australian Museum, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, the Library and Information Service of Western Australia, the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, and the Blue Room Theatre! In other words there’s something for everyone, and with regular talks, exhibitions and screenings, along with studios, bars and shops in the area, the Cultural Centre is worth a visit for those looking to explore Perth’s Museum scene.
Sunsets at Beach
Perth’s sunsets are spectacular and should not be missed. Head to Cottesloe, one of Australia’s most iconic beaches, and watch the sun melt into the water. Take a picnic, explore some of the stylish eateries and boutiques in the area or have a pint in one of the excellent local pubs
