But what is the true toll exacted by this image of perfection, disseminated within a cloak of good humour and inseminated in the minds of countless moderately sexy men and women? It triggers at once a crisis of self and a quest for the unattainable; a burning goad of inferiority; a world of impossible standards. Gone are the days when moderate sexiness was enough for a happy life: now a man must cook and weep and listen just to be a legitimate suitor. This gift is a Pandora’s Box upon the world, setting loose the demons of Idolatry and Narcissism and Low Fertility Rates upon the common people of this Earth.
If only they knew how overrated perfection is, as I discovered so many years ago.
